All cypherpunks value privacy rights, which can be said to be the common spiritual totem of this community of cryptographers, scholars, developers, and activists formed through email lists in the 1990s. But even within this community, few people practice this principle in their daily lives as thoroughly as Wei Dai. The New York Times once described him as a 'reclusive computer engineer,' and we know very little about his personal information. But this person, twenty years ago, conceived an electronic currency system very similar to Bitcoin.
